A candidate executive summary should connect relevant experience to the role in a short, factual opening. Include the most important scope or limitation so a hiring manager does not need to read the entire document to discover a material gap.
Use three connected sentences
Begin with the relevant experience, explain the work that supports it, and identify the next question. There is no required word count; the summary should be as short as it can be while remaining accurate.
Fictional example:
The candidate has experience coordinating customer implementations in a mid-market software environment. They described owning launch schedules and escalating delivery risks, while budget approval remained with the program lead. The next conversation should establish the depth of their resource-planning responsibility for this role.
This is an invented editorial example, not a customer or candidate endorsement.
Keep claims proportional
| Source evidence | Appropriate wording | Overstatement |
|---|---|---|
| Prepared weekly reports | Owned reporting preparation | Led the entire program |
| Participated in client meetings | Contributed to client discussions | Owned the client relationship |
| Interested in another interview | Open to continuing the conversation | Ready to accept |
An executive summary is a compression of reviewed evidence, not an opportunity to upgrade every verb.
Choose what belongs below the opening
Detailed project history, multiple examples, and the complete practical-details block usually belong in later sections. Keep the opening focused on why the client should review this candidate against this brief.
If the candidate does not meet an important confirmed requirement, do not hide that fact below the fold. Explain the relevant alternative experience and the question the client needs to decide. The agency should not describe an exception as a complete match.
Review for traceability
Read each sentence and identify its source. Remove adjectives that cannot be supported by the conversation or agreed assessment. Replace vague praise with an action, responsibility, or concrete example.
The full submittal template supplies the surrounding structure. Loxo's submittal product page shows candidate summaries as a distinct recruiting output; it does not validate the fictional example here. Recruit Recap similarly focuses its own submittal workflow on custom, recruiter-reviewed write-ups. Evaluate the final summary against your actual role and evidence rather than its fluency alone.
